Another MacKenzie course which features some great examples of his work which he carried out during his first visit to the South of Ireland. He presented plans for an additional 11 holes and the course was extended. MacKenzie saw no reason to change the original 7 holes. Additional substantial development took place in 1958 and late 1960's with Jeff Howes adding a further 5 holes in 1996. With minor adjustments the club now features 21 holes holes. The great James Bruen played most of his early golf at Muskerry and where he gained his first handicap. Bruen became the first Irish player to win the British Boys Championship at Royal Birkdale. He also won the Irish Close Championships of 1937 and Ballybunnion and in 1938 at The Castle. He also inspired Britain and Ireland to their first victory over the United States in the Walker Cup. This lovely course sits within some wonderful Irish countryside in a varied location of the meandering Shournagh River and Parkland. The club are now looking at a major reconstruction programme which will provide them with the best 18 holes and practice facilities to ensure a strong future for the club. It is envisaged to unify the various site characteristics and strengthen the overall character of the course. golfmarnoch were appointed in March 2007 (from a strong competition of other members of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects) to investigate the best options for the course routing and produce a working master plan, provide a hole-by-hole report and presented to the membership.
